Worksheet
Kinematics Equations #3: A Stop Light Story
Printer Friendly Version
First, read each section of the problem carefully. On your papers, write down all of your givens as well as which variable represents the requested solution. You should next write down the formula that you think will permit you to solve the problem. Finally, substitute in your givens, show your mathematical solution process, and box in your numerical answer with its appropriate units.
This form is NOT "View Correct Answers" it is a single submission graded on correctness. When you have completed the worksheet, turn your supporting paperwork in to the one-way box.
Refer to the following information for the next eight questions.
A car has a maximum acceleration when starting from rest of 5 m/sec
^{2}
and a maximum negative acceleration of -8.0 m/sec
^{2}
when stopping. The posted speed limit is 17 m/sec.
(a) What minimum distance is required to accelerate the car from rest to the posted speed limit?
How much time is required for this period of acceleration?
(b) What distance is required to accelerate the car from the posted speed limit to a complete stop?
How much time is required for this period of acceleration?
(c) If the two traffic lights are 300 meters apart, what distance must the car now travel at the posted speed limit?
How much time is required for this portion of the trip?
(d) Based on your previous answers, what would be the shortest legal time in seconds for the driver to go from one stop light to another, a total distance of 300 meters?
(e) What order of the following s-t graphs would correctly put together a pictorial representation of this problem?
You may use a letter more than once. Your "story" should include five letters.
