Demonstration: Virtual Images

Two candles are placed equal distances in front of and behind a sheet of glass. Since the glass partially reflects and partially transmits light, you can "look through" the glass to line the candles up with each other.
When one candle is lit,
the second candle "appears to burn" when the observer looks through the glass.
This ray diagram shows how the "eye" sees the virtual image of the burning candle's flame.
